Our Bettering Society ethos is at the heart of the way we do business

by Shelli NorrisPublished on 7 November 2025 7 minute read

At OneAdvanced, we believe that our business has a responsibility to make a positive impact on society. Our solution touches millions of lives daily and therefore we are deeply committed to leveraging our solutions to provide a brighter future for everyone. To picture the size of the impact we have on society, we manage 1.5 million 111 calls per month, support over 2 million FE learners across the UK and handle over 10 million wills.  As part of our dual mission to power the world of work and create a fairer, more inclusive society, we actively encourage our people to volunteer and to enrol in Give Back Days.

A few weeks ago, the Rev Ops team spent their Give Back Day volunteering at the Birmingham Settlement Nature & Wellbeing Centre.  The Centre is an eco-site demonstrating what can be done in our own neighbourhoods in the fight against climate change through community composting, rain-water harvesting, re-greening, habitat creation and at the Roots Forest School. The settlement relies on volunteers to help enable them to provide opportunities to their local communities, schools and colleges for learning about gardening and growing vegetables, and the effort from us helped ensure that their regular volunteers could concentrate on providing education opportunities for their users. Split into three groups, we worked to clear a garden and a vegetable patch of brambles, turned over and removed rubbish from several compost bins, and helped build and mend fences. It was hard and muddy work.

The team had a great day, despite the weather being rather grey and showery! Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, as everyone enjoyed spending time with each other outside of the office, building connections with team members they may not necessarily work closely with day to day. It was great to have the opportunity to interact as a wider team   achieving something together outside of our usual office environment.

You’re giving your time, skills and services, but what are you getting back?

I believe that helping others helps me, often more than I realise. Outside of work, I volunteer for local arts organisations, as a mentor for my professional body, APMP, and for a team that provide Welfare Services at music festivals. These experiences connect me to my passions, build meaningful relationships, and give me a sense of hope and community. Through volunteering, I've seen people grow in confidence and open themselves to possibilities, and I've learned valuable lessons from those I've supported.

On a personal level, discovering Positive Psychology inspired me to explore ways to live a happy, fulfilling life. Through my studies, I learned to appreciate the positive aspects of everyday life, noticing how kindness, gratitude, and positivity can build resilience and fulfilment. It’s these sparks of positivity, and the joy I get from giving my time, experience and building connections, that inspire me to be passionate about Giving Back Days.

Research shows that kindness and happiness are interconnected, creating a 'positive feedback loop' that boosts mood, reduces stress, and improves overall well-being, leading to increased life satisfaction and even longevity.

I love showing kindness through giving back because it spreads. When we do something nice for someone, it can make them want to want to be kind and give back too, and together we can have positive impact in and for our communities, and I guarantee that giving back will also help you grow your skills, confidence and joy.

I’m proud to work for a company that has pledged to Bettering Society, that actively encourages us to join Give Back Days to our communities and is powering the world of work in a responsible, transparent and ethical way.
