A OneAdvanced guide to using AI in your job search, the right way

by Robert LaniganPublished on 22 October 2025 5 minute read

At OneAdvanced, we're powering the world of work, and we're excited to give you some tips to help you power your job search so you can unleash your potential!

Just as we harness the power of AI to drive innovation and build great products our customers love, we know if used correctly AI tools can also be useful to help power your job search, ace those interviews, and secure that job you really want!

That said, AI should never steal the show. We still want to meet you, your ideas, your personality, and the spark you bring to the table. Think of AI as the sat-nav for your journey: useful for directions, but you’re still the one driving the car.

So, we’ve put together this guide on the dos and don’ts of using AI in today’s competitive job market. Follow these tips, and you’ll be in a much better position to let the best version of yourself shine. No robot required.

The Dos

Use AI to practise

AI can be a useful way to run through mock interview questions, brainstorm possible responses, or rehearse how to explain your experience. It’s a great tool for building confidence and clarity. But when it comes to the actual interview, it’s you we want to hear from! How you think, how you communicate, and how you connect with people.

Prompt example: I'm interviewing for [role title] at OneAdvanced and want to prepare by reflecting on my career and experience. Can you help me identify some key moments or turning points in my career that demonstrate my skills and experience for this role? Focus on uncovering significant accomplishments or challenges I've faced, and what did I learn from each?

Use AI to refine

Asking AI to proofread your CV, tidy up the wording on your LinkedIn profile, or suggest a clearer way to present your portfolio is a smart move. Just make sure the content still reflects your voice and experiences. A polished CV is helpful, but authenticity is key.

Prompt example: Here’s the text from my LinkedIn profile [paste your headline, About section, or job description]. Acting as an expert career coach suggest improvements to make it clearer, more engaging, and aligned with [target role/industry], while keeping my authentic voice

Use AI to simplify tricky concepts

Need a refresher on APIs, cloud architecture, or SaaS pricing models? AI can help break complex ideas down into plain English, so you feel more confident discussing them during your interview.

Use AI to keep learning

Whether it’s brushing up on industry trends, getting a high-level overview of a new technology, or exploring management frameworks, AI can be a powerful tool. Just make sure you balance it with real-world resources and experiences, since we value hands-on knowledge.

Prompt example: Summarise the top 3 trends shaping [your industry] right now. For each trend, explain why it matters, how it could affect someone in [your role/target role], and one practical step I could take to stay ahead.

Just remember to bring it back to you! If it tells you “AI and automation are transforming the industry,” that’s only half the story. What matters is how you connect it to your experience or goals.

The Don’ts

Don’t copy and paste AI answers

It’s usually obvious when someone is reading out an AI-generated script. What we want to hear is your own voice, your thought process, and your perspective.

Don’t let AI do the problem-solving for you

Often it is not about the results but the journey of how you get to that conclusion. If you rely on AI to solve coding tasks or case studies, you miss the chance to show how you think. We’re interested in how you analyse, adapt, and collaborate.

Don’t use AI as your only source of company research

AI can give you a quick overview, but it won’t always get the details right. Make sure you also look at our website, product information, and recent blog posts to get an accurate picture. That extra effort will help you ask better questions and show genuine interest.

Don’t forget the human touch

AI can spot mistakes in your CV, quiz you on interview question, and even make you sound like you swallowed a thesaurus, but it can’t show enthusiasm, curiosity, or personality, that’s where you come in. Bring your energy, ask thoughtful questions, and let us see what excites you. Those qualities matter just as much as your technical skills.

Pro tip: If you’re ever unsure about whether using AI crosses the line, ask yourself: “Am I using AI to present myself best, or to just do the presenting for me?” If it’s the latter, it’s probably a don’t.

At the end of the day AI is best used as a tool, not a substitute for preparation, curiosity, or critical thinking. We encourage candidates to use it responsibly, to learn, refine, and prepare but not to shortcut the process. When you bring both your authentic self and smart preparation to an interview, you’ll stand out far more than any AI-generated soundbite ever could, Trust us: the humans across the table/screen will notice.

Thank you for reading, we hope you’ve found these insights useful as you navigate your own journey. Wishing you every success as you put them into practice!
